Rwanda’s gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park usually starts in the early morning. You head off in small parties to one of the known mountain gorilla groups, where the gorillas are used to the presence of humans. After a few days of gorilla trekking, most Rwanda holidays will pass Lake Kivu, with its breath taking scenery, and head to the southwest, to Nyungwe Forest – which is home to chimpanzees and a wide range of other primates.

Kigali is Rwanda’s capital city and boasts a fast-developing skyline of rising modern buildings set among beautiful green highlands that characterize the majority of the country’s landscape. Volcanoes National Park runs along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda and is home to the Rwandan section of the Virungas. Comprising five volcanoes, the Virungas are nothing short of spellbinding and is one of the most exciting national parks in the African continent.
Of all the extraordinary sights and attractions this area offers, the one that never fails to captivate is the famous mountain gorillas. Understandably, most tourists visit the park to have their own experience with the gorillas in the mist, but these gentle giants also share their habitat with rare golden monkeys.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is the country’s most important area of biodiversity and is the highest priority for forest conservation in all of Africa. The biggest drawcard to the park is the opportunity to track chimpanzees, which have become accustomed to humans over the years.
The simple pleasure of hiking along the park’s well-maintained trails covering lush green valleys of the equatorial rainforest is another major highlight of the area. Although the chimps tend to steal the spotlight, there are also plenty of opportunities to witness the Angolan Colobi, Dent’s Monkeys, Grey-Cheeked Monkeys, Olive Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, and Diademed Monkeys throughout the park.
The park is divided in two by the Huye-Cyangugu road, which means you can gain access through the Kitabi Booking Office or the Gisakura Booking Office, both of which lie along this road.
